Sawdust Joint - A non-luxury gambling
environment. Opposite of Carpet Joint. Slang.
Sawbuck - Ten dollars.
Scared Money - Money a player cannot
afford to lose. Slang.
Session - Any period of gambling.
Set - In Pai Gow Poker, the name of
process of splitting their seven-card hand into two hands
of five and two, respectively.
Seven-Out - In Craps, roll a seven
when the Point has been set.
Seventh Street - In seven-card stud
poker, the fifth (and last) round of betting. Called Seventh
Street because players have seven cards.
Shark - A cheater, or an extremely
skilled card player. Slang.
Shill - A person employed by the casino
to begin a game, or to fill empty seats at a table.
Shiner - A mirror or other reflecting
object used illegally to see hidden cards.
Shoe - A wooden box which holds and
dispenses cards at a table.
Shooter - In Craps, the person rolling
the dice.
Short Run - A short series of bets
or events in any game.
Showdown - In Poker, the name of the
conclusion of a game when players show their cards to determine
a winner.
Shuffle Tracking - An illegal form
of observation used primarily in Blackjack. See Counting Cards.
Shuffle Up - Premature shuffling.
Shuffling - Mixing cards to ensure
fairness. The term encompasses numerous shuffling techniques.
Shutter - In Bingo, the name of the
flap on a Bingo card used to mark each number as it is called.
Silver Mining - Looking for coins
left in slot machines.
Single - A simple bet on only one
event or selection. Also called a Straight Bet.
Singleton - In Poker, a card that
is the only one of its rank.
Sixth Street - In seven-card stud,
the fourth round of betting. Called Sixth Street because players
have six cards.
Skin - One dollar.
Skin Game - In Poker, a game involving
more than one cheater.
Skinning the Hand - Technique used
by a cheater in Poker to get rid of extra cards.
Skoon - One dollar.
Slot Club Member - A frequent gambler
who is given a card to use on slot machines.
Snake Eyes - In Craps, a roll of the
dice producing a two.
Soft Count - Counting the contents
of a Drop Box.
Soft Count Room - The room in which
a Soft Count is administered.
Soft Hand - In Blackjack, any hand
containing an ace that is counted as eleven.
Spinner - A winning streak.
Spooking - Form of cheating in which
two players work together to cheat the house. Usually used
in Blackjack, one player attempts to see the dealer's
Hole Card and then secretly passes this information to his
partner sitting at the table.
Spot - Any number from 1 to 80 that
a player selects on a Keno ticket. It also refers to the number
of numbers that are marked on a ticket.
Stack - A stack of chips, usually
20 chips in a column commonly used in Roulette.
Stand - To not accept any more cards.

Standing Hand - In Blackjack, a hand
totalling 17 or more, but which is likely to bust if the player
hits once more. See Pat.

Steaming - A Blackjack synonym for
On Tilt. A period of poor judgement by a gambler following
a series of losses.
Stick Man - In Craps, the casino employee
who calls the rolled numbers and controls the stick.
Stiff Hand - In Blackjack, a hand
that is not Pat or Standing. A hand totalling between 12 and
16, which COULD bust.
Straight Keno - Traditional Keno,
played by marking numbers on a Keno ticket.
Streak Betting - Betting on recent
trends or streaks. In streak betting, players increase their
bets as a result of what is going on in the game. Sometimes
called Progressive Betting.
Stripping - A shuffling technique
which reverses the order of the deck, from the first card
to the last.
Stud Poker - Form of Poker played
with a combination of exposed cards and face down cards. Opposite
of Draw Poker.
Suit - Any of the four types of cards
in a deck: Clubs, Hearts, Spades or Diamonds.
Surrender - To give up a wager before
the hand is finished.
System - A method of betting based
on mathematics used in the hopes of getting an advantage.
